Intermediate Cruising Standard-5 days
Description
5 full days and 4 nights on the water cruising to the Southern Gulf Islands. With the ultimate goal of being able to cruise safely in local waters as both skipper and crew. This is on a 9 to 12-meter vessel in moderate wind and sea conditions, by day. This course is designed for the sailor with experience on cruising sailboats. It is for two students but could be three if you all know each other. The price is per person. Food can be supplied.
The objective of the intermediate course is to gain more experience on the water, become better acquainted with different types of boats, the systems onboard, learn how to handle potential emergencies and deal with the day-to-day circumstances that arise while cruising. The focus is on boat handling, vessel management, and passage planning. You will also practice coastal navigation skills on both electronic and paper charts.
Certification achieved: Intermediate Cruising Standard (Bareboat Skipper)
This course requires the following pre-requisites:
- Recognized first aid certificate
- VHF radio operator’s certificate; (can be challenged during the course)
- Completed the Basic Coastal Navigation Standard level.
To maximize the likelihood of successfully completing this course, one should preferably have:
- Experience as skipper of at least ten, day sails
- Have applied the knowledge and practiced skills in the Basic Cruising Standard
- Be able to consistently demonstrate the skills learned in Basic Cruising Standard

What to bring?
Footwear
Non Scuffing footwear. Boat shoes, Teva-type sandals or tennis shoes. (to see if it scuffs if you take it off and slide an edge of the sole on paper)
Clothing
Foul weather/Rain gear, fleece jacket, windbreaker and a sweater layer is good, during summer rain gear is usually not needed.
Personal
Sunglasses with safety string and side protection, sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher), and a cell phone or camera.’
Entertainment
Reading material, and games.
Documentation
Current driver’s license, current passport (if US travel is planned), birth certificate copy (if US travel is planned), next of kin contact information, PCOC Card, other sailing qualifications (if you have any), sailing logbook (we can provide if needed), evidence of travel insurance coverage, and BC Tidal fishing license if you wish to fish or gather shellfish.

Part 1, Part 2 or our 5- day Cruise and Learn. An introductory course, Basic Cruising Standard (Day Skipper) Can be three days in a row or three days one week apart for locals. If you want to go for a liveaboard cruise and learn the same things try the 5-day Cruise and Learn but spend more time on the water.

ROC-M(DSC) Marine VHF Radio
ROC stands for Restricted Radiotelephone Operator’s Certificate and is required by anyone using a Marine VHF or MF-HF radio (each person on the boat who will use the radio needs their own card).

We offer the Basic and Intermediate Navigation at he same time. You study at home on your own schedule, write the Basic exam first and when you pass, we then schedule the Intermediate exam.
